Antonio Ruiz Soler Centenary
Conductor: Manuel Coves | Orchestra of the Teatro Real
Antonio Ruiz Soler (1921-1996) is one of the dancers and choreographers that have most influenced Spanish dance in the 20th century. On the hundredth anniversary of his birth, and as a tribute to the man who directed the Ballet Nacional de España between 1980 and 1983, the Spanish National Ballet company has designed a programme which brings together choreographies that are faithful to the original pieces that were fundamental in his career, along with some new creations inspired by his style. Three pieces of Antonio el Bailarín have been chosen (Sonatas, Fantasía galaica and Zapateado) that represent the peak of his artistic talent in three different styles: the “bolero” school, stylized folklore and stylized flamenco. As well, on the programme are the palos flamencos (traditional flamenco musical forms) which Antonio performed frequently with his company, these will be danced through the vision of Rubén Olmo and Miguel Ángel Corbacho. To conclude the review of his artistic career is the solo piece “Leyenda,” choreographed by Carlos Vilán for the composition “Asturias” by Isaac Albéniz. Finally, there is the recreation of “Vito de gracia”, one of the signature pieces Antonio danced with his cousin Rosario in Hollywood and which will be a nod to his participation in the world of cinema.
