First performed at the Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1877, The Bayadère retains its iconic status in the field of classical dance by providing a phenomenal showcase for a world-class corps de ballet and prima ballerina. Loosely based on the Sanskrit language dramas of the Indian poet Kalidasa, this Orientalist fable is enhanced by sumptuous sets and a plot of passion, jealousy and revenge that reaches its climax in one of the pinnacles of "white ballet": the scene of the Kingdom of Shadows.
The bayadère has been a little-known delicacy outside Russia until the 1980s, when Natalia Makarova and Rudolf Nureyev presented in New York and London, respectively. With a quarter of a century in the repertoire of the Munich Staatsoper Ballet, Patrice Bart's choreography is a milestone in the rapid expansion of this work - it was the first to be undertaken in Germany - and has now become one of the three or four fundamental dance compositions in this company, backed by enormous audience appreciation.
