Over the last few years, the Teatro Real has developed its commitment to promote the inclusion of people with different abilities with various initiatives aimed at promoting their approach to music and culture.

Born in 2020, the Teatro Real Inclusive Musical Group is an initiative of national and international reference that shows how the inclusion of diversity is possible in a space of musical artistic excellence. 

At the same time, it is an example of the impact that a truly inclusive model implies in society, in a context in which we experience how collective challenges exceed individual capacities. 

The methodology applied is based on the Musical Education Model for Educational Inclusion, based on research carried out by Dr. Francisco Borro, director of the Association, and internationally recognised, both by the IAUD International Design Award 2020 (Bronze Award) and by the International Design for All Foundation Awards 2020 (Good Practice 2019). 

The Inclusive Musical Group of the Teatro Real is the heart of a larger project that opens its doors to diversity where musicians with different abilities share a common musical project. An innovative initiative by Teatro Real that opens the doors to diversity. 

A commitment from the Teatro Real that promotes inclusion. A space in which people with different abilities share a common musical project in the same time and space. 

An approach that always respects the individual pace of learning and promotes the participation of each one of its components in different training and creation sections with the same musical objective. 

METHODOLOGY

A musical approach to inclusion and attention to diversity: 

  • That faces teaching from the strengths and skills of diversity.
  • In which we learn to work together in equality. 
  • Where you learn and create cooperatively. 
  • In which excellence consists of promoting the best of each individual. 
  • In which all musicians receive personalised pedagogical attention. 

An innovative inclusive musical methodology that favours:

  • Training: based on the permanent analysis of the evolution of different executive functions (attention, working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility) that guide the execution, behaviour and musical reasoning. 
  • Research: based on the study and observation of the evidence of the different abilities through musical practice, both individually and collectively. 
  • Innovation: by generating and disseminating an unprecedented inclusive musical repertoire.

Francisco Borro Reverendo

Artistic and Musical Director 

(Madrid, 1966)

Artistic and Musical Director of the Inclusive Musical Group of the Teatro Real since September 2020, he is a Doctor of Education from the Autonomous University of Madrid as well as a Professor and researcher specialising in inclusion and attention to diversity in the practice and learning of music. He trained as a teacher and musician in different schools and conservatories in Madrid and later expanded this training with several postgraduate courses: Master in Education from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Master in Music Therapy from the Catholic University of Valencia, Master in Music Therapy from the University of Alcalá de Henares and Higher Education Degree in Music Therapy from the Autonomous University of Madrid. 

During his professional career, he has launched and directed various musical inclusion projects and he has extensive educational and informative experience. His research work and his pedagogical vocation in the field of musical inclusion have received numerous awards, among others, the Ability diploma from the Telefónica Ability Awards, the Ability Awards Good Practice 2019 at the International Design for All Foundation Awards 2020 in the category of projects, proposals, initiatives, methodologies and studies, as well as the Bronze Award of the IAUD International Design Award 2020 in the Education category. 

Jesús Alonso Yllana

Musical Co-director 

(Madrid 1965)

Co-director of the Inclusive Musical Group of the Teatro Real since September 2020. He is a Doctor from the Complutense University and a Superior Professor of Guitar from the Superior Conservatory of Music of Madrid. His teaching activity has led him to delve into different fields that have included research work in the musicological field of organology and archaeology. He has received various awards with musical groups, among them the one awarded at the "Van Wassenaer" International Competition for Early Music Ensembles (The Hague). Throughout his professional career, he has developed educational innovation projects and has collaborated in the organization and management of various musical inclusion projects. He has extensive teaching and informative experience.

The Teatro Real has incorporated a magnetic loop system in its main auditorium that allows people with hearing aids to listen to music with higher quality and improve sound reception. With this technology, the Teatro Real is the first opera house in Spain, and one of the first in the world, with auditory accessibility covering the entire seating area inside a protected historic building. 

Since 2015, its accessible mobile app allows you to download the subtitles of the work being performed, which allows you to follow it in a synchronized manner. This initiative has the support of the Royal Board of Disability.
